Ubuntu 20.04.4 with pre-compiled Cardano Node 1.35.3

By October 4, 2022October 10th, 2022No Comments

I am not inventing the wheel, I am just providing a simple solution to our Cardano Community. Every now and then I get asked a question. How hard is it to set up a pool or run a relay? Well, I made ubuntu 20.04.4 with Cardano Node 1.35.3 pre-compiled. It is as easy as installing Ubuntu on your machine. I am not a dev, I just put 2 things together.

You still need to secure the node, open ports, and Install chrony (for time synchronization) and other good stuff. I have used the CNTools process. If you want to get more info on CNTools go here.

The time it takes to set up to install Ubuntu on your local machine is less than 30 mins. It takes around 45 to 60 min to install The Cardano node.

As an SPO, Every now and then I will do a clean install of Ubuntu and then install a node on my machine.Waiting for a few hours for the installation is too much. I am running 5 bare metal servers and It would take a tremendous amount of time to get the thing done. I solve my problem by creating a custom Linux distribution. This will help other SPOs like me.

This Installation includes Ubuntu-20.04.4 and Cardano node 1.35.3

You will set up a Cardano node and fresh Linux within 30 min. Yes, the syncing node takes up to 2 days, I will be providing a snapshot of the DB folder to the closest block as possible

Lets setup a Bootable USB

Let’s create a bootable USB with a custom Linux distribution for the Cardano node pre-compiled.

I am using a mac to create the bootable USB.

  • The app I used is Balena Etcher, you can download it from here.
  • You need a USB drive with a minimum of 6GB storage.
  • Download IOS from here.
  • SHA256 checksum 962bcc8e35c42264f4037a1ab0d6e02d4cf3322086a663ed1b2cda663132a3b2

Now that we have a bootable USB, let’s install the OS.

Note: We can not run a node as the root user.  I recommend that when you are installing the OS, please use the user name ada and password whatever you like.

Now that node is installed, here are the few commands you need. To start the node as systemc D sudo systemctl start cnode . To stop the node sudo systemctl stop cnode . To check the status of the node sudo systemctl status cnode . I will be updating this post with DB snapshot link as well.

If you have any questions sets hang out in discord. https://discord.gg/J29zRTGV
